The finish, plainly explained
Dark appearance. Minimal dimensional impact.
Black oxide is a chemical conversion coating formed through a reaction at the metal surface. Unlike paint or plating, it adds very little thickness, making it a practical choice for precision-machined components with close fits and clearances.
Where it works well
Jigs, fixtures, tools, and internal machine parts where a deep black finish and low-cost, mild protection are useful.
What protection to expect
Oil or wax sealing helps limit oxidation in indoor or controlled environments. Black oxide is not a substitute for a more protective coating in harsh exposure.
Specify for the environment
Choose enough protection—not more than the part needs.
The right finish depends on where a component will operate. Select an environment to see the practical starting point; our engineers can review the drawing and confirm suitability.
A good fit for black oxide
Low cost, dark finish, tight dimensions
For indoor tooling, fixtures, and internal machinery, black oxide with an oil or wax seal can provide the desired appearance and mild corrosion resistance without materially changing dimensions.
Typical path: black oxide, then select an oil or wax seal to suit handling and storage.
Consider a higher-protection finish
More exposure requires a different assessment
For salt spray, persistent humidity, or harsh outdoor conditions, black oxide may not provide enough protection. Depending on the base material and requirements, consider zinc plating, powder coating, or another suitable finish.
We review the service environment and dimensional needs before recommending a change.
An engineering review helps avoid over-specifying a finish that adds unnecessary cost to your bill of materials.

Finishing coordinated with the part—not treated as an afterthought.
Our team works from your technical documentation to coordinate machining, heat treatment, and finishing in the right sequence.
DFM and bath suitability
Review part geometry for the blackening bath and post-process oil or wax sealing.
Tolerance management
Check that critical fits and clearances remain appropriate after finishing.
Material compatibility
Assess carbon steel, alloy steel, and selected stainless grades for process compatibility and consistent appearance.
Material traceability
Confirm material grade against process requirements to help prevent inconsistent finishes or surface pitting.
