AISI 4140 precision machining and custom manufacturing
BGCNC coordinates material sourcing, machining, heat treatment, and final grinding for high-strength shafts, gears, and structural components.
Get a manufacturing route designed around your part’s mechanical requirements, tolerance bands, and production volume—not unnecessary processing.
Material selection
A practical balance of strength, toughness, and cost
AISI 4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel valued for fatigue strength, abrasion resistance, toughness, and through-hardening capability. The right material condition and heat-treatment target help match performance to the application while avoiding over-specification.
- High-load shafts and spindles
- Heavy-duty gears and pinions
- Structural fasteners and mounting brackets
- High-stress industrial machine components
Process engineering
The production sequence shapes cost and precision
Material condition, machining order, and final finishing all affect tool wear, dimensional stability, and unit cost. We review the part and recommend a suitable route from stock or forging through inspection.
Start with the right stock condition
We select 4140 bar stock or forgings according to geometry, structural requirements, and volume. Rough machining in an annealed state can reduce tool wear when substantial material needs to be removed.
For growing production volumes, design-for-manufacturability review can help assess whether forging or CNC machining is the better fit.
Specify hardness for the real operating need
Quenching and tempering are managed to meet the target HRC range. The required hardness influences both machining strategy and the finishing work needed to hold dimensions.
Pre-hardened 4140 at approximately 28–32 HRC can be cost-effective for parts needing moderate strength. Requirements of 45+ HRC may call for rough machining, heat treatment, and final precision grinding.
Finish after heat treatment when tolerances demand it
CNC turning, milling, and grinding are sequenced to meet specified dimensions and surface finishes. Final grinding can help control hardened surfaces within your tolerance bands.
We coordinate process planning to account for the effects of heat treatment on final dimensions and avoid paying for a hardness or finishing level the application does not need.
Manufacturing capability
Match the process to the part geometry
Our network of more than 50 vetted Dongguan partners helps align equipment and secondary operations with your component and production needs.
CNC turning
Precision production of shafts and cylindrical components.
5-axis machining
Complex geometries for robotic arms, housings, and industrial parts.
Grinding
Cylindrical and surface grinding for hardened 4140 and demanding tolerances.
Secondary operations
Thread rolling, broaching, and specialized surface coatings.
Quality & traceability
Documentation for critical components
Because 4140 parts can be critical to machine performance, our manufacturing partners operate under established quality management systems, including ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and AS9100D.
Material test reports (MTRs) and inspection reports can support verification of the specified chemistry and mechanical properties.
