PEI (Ultem™) CNC Machining and Custom Parts
We coordinate custom CNC machining of PEI (polyetherimide), commonly known by the Ultem™ trade name, for B2B customers that need high-performance plastic components in prototypes and low- to medium-volume production.
BGCNC matches each project with manufacturing partners based on the part’s material grade, geometry, tolerances, quantity, documentation needs, lead time, and target cost. Our team coordinates engineering review, supplier selection, production, inspection, and delivery through one point of contact.

PEI machining for demanding applications
PEI is selected for components that need a combination of heat resistance, dimensional stability, and mechanical performance. Depending on the grade and operating conditions, it may suit applications in:
-
Aerospace equipment
Equipment and interior components
-
Medical and laboratory
Medical and laboratory equipment
-
Electrical and electronic
Electrical and electronic assemblies
-
High-temperature insulation
High-temperature insulating structures
-
Industrial machinery
Industrial machinery and instrumentation
-
Custom mechanical parts
Fixtures, housings, and brackets
PEI’s properties are grade-dependent, and actual performance depends on the part design, operating environment, and manufacturing material. We can review your application requirements and help determine whether PEI is a suitable choice.
CNC machining and supply coordination
PEI’s material cost can be a significant part of the overall project cost. Choosing the right stock form, machining strategy, and tolerances can help avoid unnecessary material use and processing expense. We coordinate machining through our network of 50+ proven manufacturing partners, selecting resources to fit each part rather than routing every project to a single factory.
Our manufacturing engineers have more than 10 years of industry experience. They can help assess whether a design can be simplified, whether tolerances are tighter than the application requires, and how to balance material yield, machining time, and part performance.
CNC milling and turning
Machining custom components from engineering plastic stock.
3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining
Process selection based on part geometry and access requirements.
Engineering and DFM review
Review of features, tolerances, material use, and manufacturability before production.
Secondary operations
Coordination of required finishing, deburring, or assembly operations.
Inspection and production management
Quality checks and supplier coordination according to the project’s agreed requirements.
Packaging and delivery
Support through production completion and international shipment planning.
Material grade, color, and documentation
“PEI” does not identify one universal material specification. Grade, form, color, and available documentation can vary by supplier and stock. We confirm these details before production rather than assuming that two PEI materials are interchangeable.
What we confirm before production
- Required PEI grade or named material specification
- Stock form and dimensions
- Color requirements and acceptable variation
- Material traceability or certification documents
- Inspection records and other required quality documentation
Controlled applications
For aerospace, medical, or other controlled applications, specify the required material and documentation standard with your RFQ. Documentation availability and scope depend on the manufacturing partner and material supplied; we confirm feasibility before order placement.
A material certificate alone does not certify a finished part or establish that it is suitable for a regulated application.
Managing cost without compromising requirements
PEI is often a higher-cost engineering plastic, so early engineering review can be valuable. We can help evaluate practical ways to control total part cost.
We will not recommend changing material or relaxing a requirement without your review. Any proposed alternative must be assessed against the application, performance needs, and customer specifications.
-
1
Confirming whether the specified grade is necessary for the service conditions
-
2
Reviewing tolerances against functional requirements
-
3
Checking part orientation and stock size to reduce avoidable material waste
-
4
Identifying features that increase machining time
-
5
Comparing prototype and production approaches as quantities change
Is PEI right for your project?
PEI may be a strong candidate when a component needs heat resistance and dimensional stability beyond what a standard plastic can provide. It may be less suitable if the design does not need those performance characteristics and material cost is the primary concern.
If you are still comparing materials or manufacturing processes, include that in your inquiry. We can review the part and discuss the trade-offs before production.
Before requesting a quote, consider:
- Operating temperature and environment
- Loads, fit, and functional tolerances
- Required PEI grade, color, and stock form
- Quantity and expected repeat order volume
- Traceability, certification, and inspection requirements
- Any restrictions on material substitutions
One coordinated partner for custom parts
International customers often need more than a machining supplier. They need help selecting suitable manufacturing resources, communicating drawing requirements, coordinating quality checks, and keeping production on schedule.
With BGCNC, you work with one team while we coordinate the relevant suppliers and processes in China. Our manufacturing network covers CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, 3D printing, die casting, forging, and other custom manufacturing processes. This can be useful when a PEI component is part of a broader assembly or multi-process project.
Request a PEI machining quote
Send us your files and requirements for a project review. To help us assess your PEI parts, include:
- 2D drawings and 3D CAD files
- PEI grade or material specification, if known
- Color and any acceptable variation
- Quantity for the initial order and expected repeat volume
- Critical dimensions and tolerances
- Required material records, inspection reports, or certifications
- Target delivery date and shipping destination
We’ll review the information, clarify open requirements, and coordinate a suitable manufacturing route and quote.
