Tool Steel Sourcing

Custom Tool Steel Parts in D2, H13, and Other Grades

BGCNC coordinates CNC machining, heat treatment, grinding, and inspection for custom tool steel components. We support overseas manufacturers sourcing dies, molds, fixtures, tooling details, and wear parts—managing the process across our manufacturing partners in Dongguan, China.

Send us your drawing, grade, target hardness, quantity, and inspection requirements. Our engineering team will review the manufacturing route and prepare an RFQ.

Custom tool steel components machined in D2 and H13 grades

Tool Steel Selection Starts With the Application

Tool steel is selected for properties such as wear resistance, hot strength, toughness, and response to heat treatment. The right grade depends on what the part must do—not only on its nominal hardness.

D2 — Cold-Work Tool Steel

A high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel commonly used for wear-resistant components such as punches, dies, and wear plates. Its hardness and wear resistance make machining and post-heat-treatment finishing important considerations.

H13 — Hot-Work Tool Steel

Alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. It is used where hot strength and resistance to thermal cycling matter, including some die and mold components.

These are general comparisons, not a substitute for an application-specific material specification. Grade standards, supply condition, section size, hardness target, and service environment can affect the recommended route. We confirm these details before production rather than assuming that a material name alone defines the requirement.

Why the Machining Sequence Matters

Tool steel parts are often most economical and dimensionally reliable when machining is planned around heat treatment.

Heat treatment can cause dimensional change. The amount and direction depend on the grade, geometry, section thickness, heat-treatment cycle, and support conditions. Thin walls, asymmetric features, sharp transitions, and large changes in section can make distortion harder to manage.

Leaving suitable finishing stock and deciding which dimensions are critical before heat treatment can reduce rework. The required allowance is part-specific; we do not apply one fixed value to every tool steel job. For hardened features, grinding or EDM may be more suitable than conventional milling, depending on geometry and tolerance.

  1. 1

    Rough machining

Machined in an annealed or otherwise machinable condition.

  2. 2

    Stress relief

Applied when appropriate for the part and process.

  3. 3

    Heat treatment

    Performed to the agreed specification.

  4. 4

    Finish machining, grinding, or EDM

As required by geometry and tolerance.

  5. 5

    Final checks

    Dimensional and documentation verification.

Coordinated Manufacturing for Tool Steel Components

A tool steel part may require more than one specialized operation. Through our network of 50+ proven manufacturing partners, we match each project to production resources suited to its material, geometry, quantity, quality requirements, lead time, and target cost.

You work with one BGCNC team while we coordinate engineering, suppliers, production, inspection, and delivery. Our core partner group is developed through real project cooperation and continuously evaluated for capability, quality consistency, delivery performance, engineering support, responsiveness, and production capacity.

CNC milling and turning

Includes 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis machining.

Surface and precision grinding

For hardened and close-tolerance features.

EDM

For features that are difficult to machine conventionally.

Heat treatment coordination

Managed to the agreed specification.

Surface finishing and secondary operations

Applied where performance requires it.

Inspection, assembly, packaging, logistics

Including international logistics support.

The available process and documentation depend on the part and the manufacturing partner selected. We confirm the proposed route and requirements as part of the RFQ review.

Engineering Review Before Quotation

Our team of 10 manufacturing engineers has more than 10 years of industry experience. We review more than machine access and cycle time. For tool steel parts, we consider how the manufacturing sequence affects final dimensions, hardness, and cost.

If a drawing leaves a key point open—such as hardness range, datum scheme, or finish on a functional surface—we raise the question before production. This helps align the quote with the part you actually need.

Our review can cover:

  • Whether the specified grade and condition fit the application
  • Which features should be roughed before heat treatment and finished afterward
  • Whether tight tolerances are necessary on every feature
  • Whether grinding or EDM is needed for critical surfaces
  • How geometry may affect distortion and finishing effort
  • What inspection points and material or heat-treatment records are required

Plan Around Hardness, Tolerance, and Surface Requirements

The manufacturing route should reflect the final condition of the component. A part supplied in a softer condition may be more straightforward to machine, while a hardened part may need grinding, EDM, or specialized machining for selected features. The practical choice depends on the hardness target, access to the feature, geometry, and required finish.

Critical dimensions

Mark the features that control fit, alignment, or function.

Hardness

Specify a target or acceptable range and the relevant test method if known.

Datums

Show how the part will be located or measured in assembly.

Surface requirements

Call out finish or treatment only where it matters to performance.

Inspection needs

State whether you need a dimensional report, material documentation, or heat-treatment records.

We can coordinate inspection documentation according to project requirements and the selected manufacturing partner’s scope. If a project requires certification or traceability, tell us during quotation so we can assess a suitable source. Certification availability depends on the actual partner and its applicable scope.

Applications We Commonly Review

Tool steel sourcing is a good fit for projects involving custom, functional parts rather than standard catalog components. We can review RFQs for:

  • Punches, die details, inserts, and wear plates
  • Mold components and tool-room parts
  • Jigs, fixtures, and inspection tooling
  • High-wear mechanical components
  • Replacement parts for machinery and production equipment
  • Small batches of engineered tooling details

These projects often combine several requirements: hardened material, close fits, ground surfaces, and multiple secondary processes. Coordinating those operations through one point of contact can reduce the burden of managing separate suppliers and technical handoffs.

Choose a Route That Fits Quantity and Product Stage

The best process depends on part geometry, material condition, tolerance, volume, and lifecycle. A one-off repair component may need a different route from a repeat production tool.

We compare process options where a different sequence or supplier mix may improve total cost, lead time, or manufacturability. The aim is not to force every tool steel job into the same workflow.

Prototype or low-volume parts

CNC machining can provide flexibility while the design is being validated.

Hardened precision features

Grinding or EDM may be appropriate where the required geometry and tolerance justify those operations.

Repeat orders

A documented process sequence and agreed inspection points can help keep production consistent across batches.

Parts with multiple operations

Coordinated machining, heat treatment, and finishing can simplify supplier management and technical communication.

One Point of Contact for China-Based Supply Coordination

International buyers can often locate individual factories. The harder part is choosing a suitable source for each operation, communicating drawing intent, tracking production, and resolving issues across suppliers.

BGCNC acts as your engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain partner in China. We coordinate the relevant manufacturing partners for your project and keep communication moving between your team and production. This is especially useful for high-mix, low- to medium-volume orders that combine tool steel parts with other custom components or processes.

Our wider capabilities also include sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, 3D printing, die casting, forging, stamping, extrusion, investment casting, plastic machining, and assembly. If your BOM includes parts beyond tool steel, we can review them together and coordinate suitable processes.
