What it controls
A finishing step for critical surfaces
Precision grinding removes a small amount of material with an abrasive wheel after earlier operations such as CNC machining or heat treatment. It can help bring selected features to their specified final dimensions and surface condition.
Grinding is not a substitute for sound design or accurate upstream machining. Stock allowance, material condition, geometry, and tolerance all affect whether a part can be ground efficiently.
Size and fit
Finish a diameter, thickness, or other feature to its final size and bring mating features closer to their required fit.
Roundness and cylindricity
Finish cylindrical features that need to rotate, locate, or fit consistently.
Flatness and parallelism
Improve the relationship between mating faces, tooling surfaces, or equipment supports.
Surface roughness
Target the surface finish specified for a functional part surface.
Coordinated manufacturing route
Machining, heat treatment, and grinding planned together
A ground feature depends on the operations before it. Machining establishes datums and leaves finishing stock; heat treatment can affect dimensions; grinding brings selected surfaces to their final requirements. Coordinating these steps helps reduce handoff, dimension-chain, and delivery risks that can arise when suppliers work separately.
Review my manufacturing route-
01
Review the part and drawing
Identify critical features, datum references, material, specified finish, and inspection requirements.
-
02
Plan upstream machining
Consider how to machine the part and leave appropriate grinding allowance where required.
-
03
Coordinate heat treatment, if specified
Communicate material condition and sequence requirements to the selected manufacturing partner.
-
04
Arrange suitable grinding and inspection
Match requirements to available partner capabilities, align the inspection plan with the drawing, and coordinate delivery.
Parts and applications
Grinding support for custom industrial components
We help source parts where one or more surfaces need controlled finishing after machining or heat treatment. The information below helps us assess the project and its requirements.
| Part or application | Typical grinding need | Helpful project details |
|---|---|---|
| Shafts and pins | Diameter, roundness, cylindricity, or bearing-fit control | Finished diameter, tolerance, length, material, and heat-treated condition |
| Mold and tooling components | Flat, parallel, or fitted surfaces | Critical faces, datum scheme, hardness, and surface-finish requirement |
| Precision-fit components | Controlled mating dimensions or contact surfaces | Fit details, mating-part information, and tolerance callouts |
| Equipment and CNC-machined parts | Finished faces, bores, cylindrical features, or selected surfaces | Feature function, drawing datums, machining stock, and inspection needs |
| Heat-treated parts | Finishing specified surfaces after treatment | Material specification, hardness requirement, and process sequence |
When needed, we can coordinate other processes including CNC milling and turning, EDM, sheet metal fabrication, surface finishing, assembly, and packaging.
RFQ checklist
Details that help us assess feasibility
Grinding requirements are drawing-specific. We review the values and symbols you specify and confirm feasibility with the selected manufacturing partner rather than assuming a standard tolerance or finish.
Dimensions and geometry
Final size and tolerance for each ground feature, plus roundness, cylindricity, flatness, parallelism, or other geometric callouts.
Finish and material
Roughness value and measurement specification, if applicable, along with material grade, condition, and specification.
Process and part data
Heat-treatment requirements, hardness, sequence, 2D drawing, 3D model, and datum references.
Quantity, schedule, and inspection
Prototype or production quantity, requested delivery date, reports, traceability, and documentation requirements.
Capability is confirmed against the actual drawing and partner selection. Certification availability, traceability, and inspection documentation depend on the manufacturing partner assigned to the project; include any required scope in your RFQ.
Practical process selection
Choose the route that fits the part—not just the process name
Grinding can make sense when a functional surface needs tighter control than the preceding process can reliably provide and the geometry is accessible to a suitable method. It may not be necessary for every dimension or every part.
Our engineering review considers:
- 01Whether CNC turning or milling can meet the requirement without a separate grinding step.
- 02Whether grinding is needed only on selected features rather than across the whole part.
- 03Whether tolerance or surface-finish requirements could be adjusted without affecting function.
- 04Whether another route better suits the material, quantity, and product lifecycle.

China sourcing coordination
One contact for multi-process projects
For overseas hardware, automation, and equipment companies, the challenge is often coordinating the full supply chain—not finding one machine shop. A ground component may need machining, heat treatment, finishing, and inspection, each with its own supplier and schedule.
BG CNC coordinates project communication across selected partners. Our network includes 50+ proven manufacturing partners evaluated through real project cooperation for capability, quality consistency, delivery performance, engineering support, responsiveness, and reliability.
A useful fit for teams that need:
Multiple custom parts or SKUs
Small and mid-sized companies sourcing a varied part list.
Mixed-process BOMs
Machinery and equipment manufacturers coordinating several operations.
A production transition
Product teams moving from prototypes toward low- or medium-volume production.
Clear communication
Overseas manufacturers seeking additional China sourcing capacity and coordinated delivery.
Certification availability and scope depend on the partner selected for the project. Specify any quality system, material traceability, or inspection records required for your order.
Common questions
Planning a precision grinding project
Can you coordinate grinding after heat treatment?
Yes. We can review the required sequence, material condition, and drawing requirements, then coordinate heat treatment and grinding with selected manufacturing partners.
What should I send for a manufacturing review?
Send your 2D drawing and 3D model if available, material and heat-treatment requirements, critical tolerances and finish callouts, quantity, schedule, and inspection needs.
Can you confirm a standard grinding tolerance before reviewing my drawing?
Requirements are drawing-specific. We review the feature, geometry, material, and selected partner capability before confirming feasibility.
Can you suggest an alternative to grinding?
Our engineers assess whether CNC machining can meet the requirement, whether only selected surfaces need grinding, or whether another route better suits the design and expected volume.
